Canyons School District unifies 34,000 students with Canvas

Canyons School District faced the challenge of building a new educational technology infrastructure after becoming a separate district in 2009. After trying several platforms, the district adopted the Canvas learning management system from Instructure in 2012. However, for years Canvas was perceived primarily as a secondary school tool, creating a divide until the COVID-19 pandemic forced a district-wide transition to remote learning and required unifying all grade levels on a single platform.

Instructure's Canvas solution provided the foundation for this shift. The district implemented a Canvas Expectations Style Guide, used the platform as a central hub for resources and professional development, and created shareable curriculum maps. The results allowed teachers to focus more on pedagogy and less on technology, establishing a robust blended learning model. Critically, Canvas became the unified base for all teaching and learning, ensuring equitable access for every student whether learning in-person or remotely and strengthening district-wide unity.
