Bloom modernizes 1970s heart diagnosis with Instil over four decades later

Instil was hired to design and develop a touch-screen interface for an electrophysiology heart stimulator system used by Bloom, an American medical device company. The challenge was to modernize a reliable but outdated 1970s-era medical device, replacing its physical switches and dials with a digital solution while maintaining its renowned ease of use and reliability for cardiologists diagnosing heart arrhythmias.

The solution implemented by Instil involved creating a resource-constrained, embedded software application for a capacitive touch screen. This software employed a high-performance computing approach with a tight threading model and Reactive Extensions to ensure seamless real-time hardware integration and a fluid user interface. The result was a modernized, robust, and safety-critical system that provides vital visual and audio feedback to physicians, successfully updating a much-loved product for the modern era.
