Dogfooding with Instametrics

Dogfooding with Instametrics, the internal monitoring and analytics platform at Instaclustr, needed to handle a massive stream of infrastructure metrics from thousands of managed nodes. The team had to ingest more than 50,000 metric events per second, store about a terabyte of data per day, support time-range reads, retain recent raw metrics for short-term troubleshooting, and keep long-term summaries for trend analysis and predictive analytics.

Instaclustr solved this by using Apache Cassandra and Apache Spark together as the core of Instametrics. Cassandra stores recent time-series metrics with a 72-hour TTL and DateTieredCompactionStrategy for efficient time-slice queries, while Spark rolls data up into five-minute, two-hour, and one-day aggregates. The deployment runs on a 12-node AWS cluster with over 9TB of storage, 48 CPUs, and 192GB of memory, giving Instaclustr the scale and availability needed to support its mission-critical monitoring and alerting environment.
