A Inspera Case Study
The University of Bath began exploring digital examinations in 2016 to find a more robust, efficient, and purpose-built assessment solution than its existing VLE-based quizzes. Working with Inspera, the university aimed to improve accessibility for students with learning support needs, increase marking efficiency, reduce handwriting-related bias, and make assessment operations more time- and cost-effective.
Inspera supported the University of Bath through a pilot and then a full rollout of online assessment, including onscreen authoring, delivery, marking, BYOD exams, and integration with the student records system. The pilot ran without incidents and included a range of question types; in one trial, 70% of students chose the digital option, and scanning with the Scantron solution took about 15 minutes of administrator time for the entire exam. The university reported a very positive experience, with most students with special needs and learning disabilities preferring digital exams to pen and paper.
