A InRule Case Study
The State of Michigan Department of Technology Management and Budget supported the Michigan Department of Corrections, which needed a better way to manage highly complex offender “timecomp” calculations across 22 correctional facilities and a prison population of more than 40,000. The challenge was to replace an aging mainframe approach that relied on manual spreadsheets and documents, while keeping pace with frequent policy and legislative changes. InRule provided a business rule management solution to help modernize this critical process.
Using InRule, a small team of three was able to build the timecomp rules engine, which included 200–250 rules and more than 5,000 logic combinations, in 14 months. The solution now processes about 12,000 transactions each day, improving efficiency and accuracy and reducing risk in sentence calculations. According to the customer, InRule made it easier to write and manage rules and turned a high-risk project into one of the department’s most successful modernization efforts.
