A InRule Case Study
The Michigan Department of Corrections (DOC) faced the high-stakes challenge of modernizing its extremely complex and rule-intensive "timecomp" system for calculating offender sentences. Hindered by an aging mainframe and manual processes that were vulnerable to error, the department turned to vendor InRule for a solution to automate and manage the intricate logic governing sentence length.
Using InRule's business rule management system, a team of three was able to author the entire system of 200-250 rules with over 5,000 logic combinations. The implementation was completed in 14 months, and the solution now processes 12,000 transactions daily. InRule made the timecomp process significantly more efficient and accurate, with a state official describing the project as "one of the most successful and the least risky" parts of their modernization initiative.
