A INRIX Case Study
Iowa DOT needed a better way to collect timely traffic data, especially in rural areas where traditional roadway sensors had gaps in coverage. To address this challenge, the agency partnered with **INRIX** and its big data and analytics traffic information service to supplement its existing sensor network with broader, GPS-based traffic speed data.
**INRIX** provided probe data from mobile phones, connected cars, trucks, delivery vans, and fleet vehicles, giving Iowa DOT real-time speed information across **8,758 centerline miles** of roadway, including more ramps and interchanges. The data is helping travelers avoid delays, supporting the Traffic Operations Center during incidents, and enabling planners to identify recurring bottlenecks and freight impacts for future improvements, while also comparing the value of probe data against the cost of installing and maintaining physical sensors.
