Case Study: INDOT Traffic Management improves road safety and traffic operations with INRIX

A INRIX Case Study

Preview of the INDOT Traffic Management Case Study

How applied research is guiding a new generation of transportation management solutions

INDOT Traffic Management worked with INRIX and Purdue University to address traffic safety and congestion challenges across Indiana, especially in rural areas with limited ITS coverage and on long detour routes. By using INRIX Real-Time Traffic data, INDOT needed better visibility into sudden slowdowns, backups, and alternate-route conditions that could lead to rear-end crashes, delays, and unsafe work zones.

INRIX supported a solution that included real-time dashboards and the development of backup detection capabilities, later informing INRIX Safety Alerts and its Dangerous Slowdowns product. INDOT used the system to monitor traffic, identify diversion routes, and manage a major 37-mile I-65 detour, adding temporary signals, signs, and message boards while retiming signals to improve flow. The result was substantially improved corridor operations, better situational awareness for engineers and public safety officials, and faster, safer traffic management during disruptions.
