Genesee Transportation Council Teams with INRIX to Better Analyze Incidents, Improve Congestion Performance and Traveler Safety

Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) needed a better way to analyze the impacts of major roadway incidents on traffic operations, especially after a severe tanker truck crash closed lanes on NYS Route 590 near the I-490/I-590 interchange. GTC turned to INRIX and its INRIX Analytics service to compare incident-day conditions with a control date and assess how the crash affected congestion, travel patterns, and traveler safety.

With INRIX Analytics, GTC used vehicle probe data to measure before-and-after traffic conditions, map travel time index (TTI) changes, and compare results with travel demand model outputs. The analysis showed clear incident impacts on I-590 North and NY 590 South, while I-490 remained mostly stable, helping GTC better understand the crash’s geographic and temporal reach and improve coordination between transportation operators and emergency responders.
