Floating Car Data Enhances Traffic Accuracy in Bavaria

The Bavarian Transportation Department, through its Traffic Management Centre (ZVM), needed a more accurate way to provide traffic information across Bavaria’s road network, especially on secondary roads where sensor coverage left long “blind spots.” It turned to INRIX and its floating car data (FCD) to assess whether GPS-based traffic data could supplement or replace additional roadside sensors.

INRIX’s floating car data was tested against road-sensor data and found to be highly reliable, delivering real-time data 70% of the time overall and 55% on secondary roads, with route, travel time, and speed accuracy reaching 96%. The study concluded that INRIX’s data was “just as good” as sensor data and could reliably fill coverage gaps, helping the Bavarian Transportation Department improve traffic updates and future traffic predictions without installing more sensors.
