Case Study: Florida Department of Transportation identifies and ranks traffic bottlenecks with INRIX Historical Traffic Data

A INRIX Case Study

Preview of the Florida Department of Transportation Case Study

FDOT needed a way to identify traffic bottlenecks and analyze their severity to develop a plan of attack

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) faced the challenge of identifying and analyzing severe traffic bottlenecks caused by population growth and economic recovery. These bottlenecks were detrimental, increasing travel times, fuel consumption, and air pollution. To develop a systematic plan, FDOT partnered with vendor INRIX to utilize their Historical Traffic information.

INRIX provided a comprehensive spatial and temporal database of historical traffic flow data, which was used to pinpoint the state's worst congestion areas. The solution processed hundreds of millions of data points to accurately identify and rank bottlenecks. As a result, FDOT gained the insights needed to prioritize improvements. The project, powered by INRIX data, also received the "Best Project Award" at the ITE’s 2014 Annual Meeting.
