Virginia Department of Transportation Conducting Employee Exit Surveys to Understand Employee Turnover

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which builds and maintains the state’s roads, bridges and tunnels, faced an inefficient exit-survey process that relied on monthly mailed paper surveys and manual data entry. That approach produced low response rates, slow and error-prone analysis, and little ability for HR to compare district-level feedback with agency-wide trends.

In May 2014 VDOT switched to Inquisium’s online surveys, sending postcards with a survey link and QR code and deploying a centralized dashboard for real-time, district- and agency-level reporting. The change raised response rates and employee net promoter scores, cut time to collect and analyze feedback, added an opt-in contact for employee relations, and spurred creation of a task force to act on exit-survey insights.
