City of Kokomo turns 26 acres of brownfield into a 7.2-MWdc solar array with Inovateus Solar

The City of Kokomo, Indiana faced a long-standing challenge in redeveloping a former industrial brownfield and superfund site. For a decade, they had attempted to attract new manufacturers to the land. With support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, they decided to pursue a new solution: converting the site into a solar farm. The vendor, Inovateus Solar, was engaged to provide a solar solution for this unique challenge.

Inovateus Solar designed and developed a 7.2-MWdc solar array on the site. Their solution utilized an above-ground, ballasted racking foundation to avoid disturbing the contaminated soil cap. The project successfully turned the brownfield into a productive "brightfield." As a result, the city now receives revenue from an annual lease agreement and saves on maintenance costs. The project was hailed as a model for brownfield redevelopment and won an EPA Region 5 RENEW Award for excellence in site reuse.
