HSBC Insurance Speeds Reorganizations and Batch Jobs with CoSort

HSBC Bank’s insurance arm needed a faster, more maintainable way to update its Sybase databases from large daily and monthly text and binary files. Existing C programs and in-house sort routines were slow (a single sort could take an hour), hard to maintain and hit a data-volume ceiling, so HSBC turned to Innovative Routines International (IRI) and its CoSort (SortCL) product to handle high-volume transformations outside the database.

Innovative Routines International (IRI)’s CoSort was implemented to presort, transform and aggregate files in a single I/O pass, freeing the database for queries. The change cut a one-hour sort to five minutes, improved average system performance by about 60% (over 80% in some cases), removed volume limits, reduced complexity and ran reliably for years, enabling HSBC to adopt CoSort across other departments.
