Uva Alumni Association Successfully Confronts Ransomware

The UVA Alumni Association, which serves about 250,000 alumni with an 80-person staff, runs a Windows PC and server environment protecting roughly 1 TB of data. Their network was hit by Zepto ransomware early one morning, encrypting over 63,000 Excel files and bringing office operations to a halt.

Because they’d migrated from tape to an on‑prem Infrascale backup appliance with daily backups, the network drives were wiped and a clean restore was initiated from the web dashboard; the full recovery took 1.5 hours. The quick restore avoided paying the ransom, minimized downtime and preserved critical data, earning praise from leadership and staff.
