Oregon Town and Local ISP Team Up to Extend Services to City Workers and Offer Free Wi-Fi with Cisco Wireless Mesh Network

The City of Lebanon, a small municipal government in northwestern Oregon, wanted to improve public safety, public works responsiveness, and field productivity while also encouraging economic development and offering low-cost wireless access to residents and visitors. To do this without heavy capital or support costs, the city partnered with Information Transport Solutions and local ISP PEAK Internet to explore a citywide wireless mesh network using Cisco wireless mesh technology.

Information Transport Solutions helped enable a Cisco Unified Wireless Network solution built on Cisco Aironet 1500 Series outdoor mesh access points, a Cisco 4400 Series Wireless LAN Controller, and Cisco Wireless Control System software. The result was a self-healing citywide Wi‑Fi network that provides free Internet access and secure wireless services for city workers, while supporting future applications like mobile reporting, database access, video surveillance, GIS access, and permit management. The city also recoups part of its investment through franchise fees, with PEAK Internet handling deployment, maintenance, and expansion.
