Austin’s Wireless Mesh Provides Free Access and Test Environment

The City of Austin, a fast-growing government organization, needed ways to support economic development, attract new businesses, improve communications, and strengthen emergency response capabilities. Information Transport Solutions worked with the city on a wireless infrastructure initiative that included Cisco wireless mesh and Wi-Fi technologies to create a citywide test bed and provide free public Internet access in downtown Austin.

Information Transport Solutions helped deploy a Cisco-based wireless mesh network across the convention center and a seven-square-block downtown area, along with secure voice and emergency communications capabilities. The solution gave more than 2,100 WCIT attendees free wireless access, improved mobility for city staff, enabled field testing for new applications, and laid the groundwork for future public services and expanded wireless coverage.
