Real-time Information System Dramatically Cuts Costs, Improves Decision-Making

Toshiba Personal Computer System (a Toshiba subsidiary) needed to modernize its mission‑critical information environment after years of growth left it with a costly, unstable system that produced slow, insecure, and labor‑intensive reporting. Management could not get timely ordering, sales or accounting information, forcing heavy manual work and creating hidden “Costs of Poor Quality.”

The company trialed and implemented Information Builders’ WebFOCUS, integrating it with Active Directory and Meta‑Frame and upgrading communications with an optical‑fiber network to enable browser‑based, self‑service reporting. The rollout cut processing by about 785 man‑hours per month (eliminating one staff position), reduced outsourcing and communications expenses, and delivered roughly 71 million yen in annual savings, while stabilizing operations, improving decision‑making and becoming the firm’s BI standard — now even offered to customers.
