A Information Builders Case Study
NYU Hospital Center (now NYU Langone Medical Center) faced rising and hard-to-manage labor costs across fixed and variable departments and lacked timely, actionable insights—previous Excel-based prototypes were too cumbersome for managers. Leadership created a Performance Management Office to tackle the challenge of aligning staffing budgets with patient volumes and driving accountability across 230 department managers.
They built a web-based Labor Productivity tool that integrated payroll, billing and budget data, used relative value units (RVUs) to standardize service measurement, and delivered bi-weekly dashboards with drill-down reports. Deployed in five months, the system drove sustained productivity improvements (reducing FTEs per occupied bed), produced significant salary cost savings, increased charge capture and revenue, and established a culture of accountability and timely decision-making across the hospital.
