Conestoga College Grooms a New Generation of Analytics Professionals

Conestoga College, a public polytechnic in Kitchener, Ontario serving 11,000 full‑time and 30,000 continuing‑education students across 200+ programs, needed to give students practical skills in modern business intelligence and analytics for healthcare and other industries. The challenge was to create a hands‑on curriculum that taught BI principles and tools in real‑world settings so graduates would be job‑ready and able to support clinical and administrative decision‑making.

Conestoga formed a three‑way partnership with Information Builders (providing WebFOCUS App Studio, licenses and materials) and Guelph General Hospital (providing anonymized datasets and project guidance). Students used App Studio in labs and month‑long field placements to build dashboards, portals and analyses—quickly producing visualizations that revealed insights into surgical wait times and employee sick‑time costs—helping the hospital improve performance metrics tied to funding while preparing a new generation of analytics professionals.
