UNC Health Uses Data Governance to Deliver a Coordinated Response to COVID-19

UNC Health, a not‑for‑profit integrated health system in North Carolina, faced the urgent challenge of giving executives and care teams timely, trusted views of COVID‑19 screening, patient counts, and resource needs across a dispersed network of hospitals and clinics. With a goal to enable self‑service analytics and promote data literacy, the organization needed stronger data governance and a single source of truth to support fast decision‑making during the pandemic.

UNC Health built the Carolina Data Warehouse for Health 3.0 on SAP HANA and deployed Informatica Axon (Empower) and Enterprise Data Catalog to catalog assets, show lineage, and provide a collaborative portal for stewards and business users. The teams published the first executive dashboard in a weekend and rolled out ten more within two weeks, enabling real‑time situational awareness, faster resource and PPE decisions, improved data discovery and stewardship, and accelerated impact analysis across the organization.
