A Informatica Case Study
Railinc, the for‑profit subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads, provides critical data and IT services to the North American freight rail industry. Faced with critical transportation data scattered across Oracle apps, a Hadoop data lake and multiple analytics tools, business users struggled to find, understand and trust data, often relying on IT and receiving inconsistent information that could impact decisions.
Railinc implemented Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog, complemented by Informatica Data Quality and PowerExchange Change Data Capture, to index metadata, add business context, build attribute‑level end‑to‑end lineage, standardize and deduplicate data, and capture changes automatically. The result: self‑service discovery for business users with growing adoption (45 metadata resources scanned and scaling beyond 100), increased confidence in trusted data, reduced dependence on IT, and more timely, accurate information to support railroad operations and analytics.
