Improve Data Management and Reduce Infrastructure Costs with Enterprise Application Archiving and Test Data Management

IKON Office Solutions, a Ricoh company in Pennsylvania, provides document and office-equipment management and ran a growing Oracle E-Business Suite ERP and warehouse management system. As transaction volumes increased, one production and 13 nonproduction database copies ballooned in size, causing rising storage, server, licensing and staffing costs and degraded performance; IKON needed to shrink databases, curb growth, and keep archived data accessible while maintaining valid test environments.

Over six months IKON deployed Informatica Data Archive and Data Subset to move infrequently accessed transactional data to a cheaper, online archive and to create referentially complete, much smaller test databases. The initiative cut production and nonproduction sizes (many nonprod copies fell from ~7.5TB to 2.5TB and production saved ~800GB), shortened backups by 25%, avoided additional CPUs, saved roughly 3+ FTEs of IT labor, improved user productivity (~15 minutes per heavy user/day, ~25% impact), and delivered a 542% five-year ROI with a 7.7-month payback.
