A Influxdata Case Study
tado° is a Munich-based smart-home company that builds Smart Thermostat and Smart AC Control products to reduce energy use while maintaining comfort. As its user base grew from hundreds to hundreds of thousands, the company struggled with collecting, storing and querying large volumes of time-series device data (historical temperature, humidity, location and device state) using MySQL, causing slow mobile user reports and a need for 12‑month retention and real-time responsiveness.
tado° moved its time-series data to InfluxDB/InfluxCloud, sending device telemetry via secure WebSockets to AWS application servers (5–10 writers, ~5,000 points/s, batch writes) with Netflix Hystrix for resilience; upgrading to InfluxDB 1.1 improved query performance ~200x. The change delivered fast, scalable user reports and real-time automation, enabled 12‑month retention, and powered features like remote control, geo-based on/off, multi‑zone management and reported energy savings up to ~40%, with plans to add streaming analysis (Kapacitor) and improved graphing (Chronograf).
