A Influxdata Case Study
Spiio is a sensor-driven IoT company that monitors and manages living green walls in urban buildings. Faced with the complexity of maintaining city-scale plant installations, the team found its initial Xively/MongoDB setup too inefficient for real-time remote monitoring and analytics, and discovered off-the-shelf IoT platforms would force unwanted changes to their processes. They needed a time-series solution that could track metrics, detect anomalies, and support predictions while mapping to their business workflows.
Spiio implemented the InfluxData stack—InfluxDB for time-series storage, Kapacitor for streaming analytics and event detection, Chronograf for visualization and alerts, and Telegraf for collection—together with Electric Imp for secure device connectivity and a message-broker ingestion layer. Tagged, zone-based sensor data (sent hourly and batched) lets horticulturists drill down from wall-level to spot-level performance. The result: real-time analytics that enabled data-driven maintenance and design, faster product development, competitive SLAs, and international growth including US installations in San Francisco, New York, and Miami.
