A Influxdata Case Study
Siminars was looking for a less complex time-series database. They had a couple of options like Cassandra and OpenTSDB, but InfluxDB stood out for its simplicity. They found the query language quite handy and having not dealt with any column database before, InfluxQL was an easy query language to learn. They use AWS Cloudfront to serve all their static content. However, there was no easy way of querying or visualizing the metrics around the static delivery. Static content delivery provided Siminars with real insights, like how long does it take for a video to be downloaded on a client's web page which we could directly translate into what sort of encoding they needed in that region, for that customer, or for a particular tenant. And of course these heuristics keep changing over time. So, they decided to dump all the cloudfront logs into an InfluxDB server. It started off as an experiment but it went on to gulp hundreds of gigabytes of logs and has been running rather smoothly for over a year now.
