Penn State, a public, research-intensive university, partnered with InfluxData to streamline DevOps by making Nagios monitoring data more useful and accessible. Their existing tools—pnp4nagios and graphios—made it difficult to find and compare metrics across their active/passive Nagios systems and to combine Nagios data with metrics from other systems.

They solved this by writing a custom Python script that uses the influxdb‑python client to send Nagios metrics into InfluxDB, with improved logging, simpler configuration, and clearer code, plus a scripted dashboard to display host metrics. The new pipeline makes data discovery and cross-system correlation straightforward and sets them up to integrate metrics from other collectors (like Telegraf) to replace their aging Ganglia installation.
