ntop is a small, engineering-driven, debt‑free company that has been profitable for more than a decade. Its flagship product, ntopng, is a next‑generation, web‑based network traffic probe (think "top" for networks) that runs on Unix, macOS and Windows and exposes real‑time traffic information and limited administration via a browser. The challenge was to store and serve high‑volume time‑series network data with low CPU and memory overhead while delivering fast, real‑time visibility to users and embedded customers.

ntop solved this by adopting InfluxData’s InfluxDB as a replacement for RRD, giving a faster, more scalable time‑series backend. The integration reduced resource use, sped up queries and made real‑time monitoring practical across deployments, improving ntopng’s performance, usability and ability to scale for both individual users and embedded OEM customers.
