Cree, a global manufacturer of LEDs and lighting products, launched SmartCast® Technology in 2014 to embed sensors and intelligence into fixtures and simplify deployment of networked lighting. The company faced a major challenge: manually commissioning and managing large numbers of lights was time-consuming, error-prone, and costly, while customers needed secure, real-time visibility and scalable control for analytics, maintenance and energy optimization.

Cree solved this with a PoE-enabled SmartCast gateway and an 802.15.4 mesh of embedded lights (software written in Go, multi‑VLAN compliant) that streams all fixture logs into InfluxDB. The result is fast, real-time reporting and analytics, simplified commissioning and maintenance, easier upgrades and expansion, improved decision support and energy savings — at about half the installed cost of competing solutions.
