Case Study: Linn County achieves halved backup times and reduced application latency with Infinio

A Infinio Case Study

Linn County accelerates backups and enterprise applications

Linn County, Oregon, serves over 100,000 residents with a small IT team that runs critical services—taxes, criminal justice, vital records—on VMware hosts and a cost‑optimized whitebox iSCSI storage array. As data grew and additional SANs were added, application storage performance and backup windows became a bottleneck; buying SSDs was cost‑prohibitive and backups to a remote site with Veeam were taking about four hours.

The county deployed Infinio caching across its VMware hosts (starting with 8 GB per host and growing to 166 GB total), producing immediate improvements: Veeam backups were cut from four hours to two, latencies dropped across SQL, JustWare and ownCloud (average cache‑hit response ~400 µs), and the solution required little maintenance. The performance gains also let the team consider denser RAID 6 for databases and plan further VMware growth while maintaining service delivery.
