GÉANT Selects Infinera Packetaware Optical Transport Network to Solve “Elephant Flow” Problem

GÉANT, Europe’s leading research and education network, needed a better way to handle rapid traffic growth and “elephant flows” above 10 Gb/s without overbuilding expensive router capacity. The organization also wanted a smoother path from 10 Gb/s to 100 Gb/s links, and turned to Infinera’s DTN-X packet-aware optical transport platform to address the challenge.

Infinera implemented its Packet Switching Module (PXM) in GÉANT’s existing DTN-X network, using VLAN and MPLS tags to route traffic more efficiently across the super-channel backbone. The result was nearly a 50% reduction in expensive router ports versus non-packet-aware approaches, plus a flexible foundation for moving higher-demand traffic to dedicated 100 Gb/s trunks as needed.
