AI-powered symptom checker to become a digital health partner for customers

Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), Germany's largest health insurance company, sought to strengthen its digital healthcare services and support customers with immediate, reliable medical information. Their challenge was to provide a low-threshold, evidence-based alternative to internet searches for their members experiencing health concerns. To address this, TK partnered with vendor Infermedica to implement its AI-powered symptom checker into the TK-Doc-App.

Infermedica's solution, a Class IIb medical device, was seamlessly integrated into the app, allowing users to complete a symptom analysis in minutes. The results provided individualized care recommendations and possible causes for symptoms. The implementation was highly successful, with over 27,000 symptom checks conducted in the first year. A survey showed 86% of users were satisfied with the assessment, and 76% of those who received a self-care recommendation intended to follow it. This helped TK effectively expand its digital care platform and improve health literacy.
