A Inductive Automation Case Study
Drillmec S.p.A., an international oil and gas company specializing in drilling plants and equipment, needed to redesign its supervision system across multiple levels: HMI, higher-level supervision, cloud synchronization, and customer-facing dashboards. The company also wanted a more flexible way to support many rig variations and customer-specific requirements. Inductive Automation’s Ignition SCADA platform was used to meet these needs.
Inductive Automation helped Drillmec build a highly customized, web-based HMI/SCADA solution with a lean client-server architecture, eliminating software installation on PCs and supporting many access points. Using extensive Python scripting in Ignition, Drillmec created personalized interfaces and later upgraded to Ignition 8, with plans to adopt Ignition Perspective for a centralized application. The result was a scalable system for rigs with 10,000–20,000 tags, up to 15 clients, and 2,000–5,000 alarms, plus an advanced drilling simulator for operator training.
