A Inductive Automation Case Study
Clovis Community College, a higher education institution in Fresno, California, sought to provide its Automation, Robotics & Mechatronics students with hands-on, industry-relevant experience in Industry 4.0 technologies. The challenge was to build an accessible and affordable training system that could demonstrate real-world automation concepts. Through its Educational Engagement Program, vendor Inductive Automation provided the college with Ignition software licenses and expert support to make this project possible.
The solution implemented by Inductive Automation was an "Industry 4.0 Project" that combined Ignition with low-cost hardware like Raspberry Pis and miniature smart homes. Students used Ignition to establish a Unified Namespace via MQTT, create tags, and build Perspective dashboards for real-time control and monitoring. The project was highly successful, giving students immediate tangible results and valuable troubleshooting skills. The measurable impact was significant, with one student directly securing a job at an integrator using Ignition due to his experience, and the project's curriculum expanding to numerous other colleges and high schools.
