Large SE Asian Taxi Firm - Customer Case Study

Indium Software worked with a large South East Asian Taxi Firm, a market-leading taxi operator with a fleet of about 23,000 vehicles across 61 depots and more than 8.5 million passengers served monthly. The client needed a way to analyze second-by-second geospatial time-series data from every taxi to understand occupancy patterns and find opportunities to raise occupancy rates, but data processing was difficult because of the 30GB/month data volume and the complexity of preparing location-based time-series data for analytics.

Indium Software built a big data and advanced analytics solution using Apache Hive external tables on the Hadoop ecosystem to preprocess the data and create derived fields such as half-hour of day and day of week. The team also used geospatial analytics, including the Haversine formula and city grid analysis, to identify occupancy trends by time, location, and hotspots. As a result, the client discovered that occupancy was highest between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. due to mosque visits in Indonesia, and the analysis also revealed previously unknown upcoming hotspots in the city outskirts.
