Accelerating Creation of Large Terrains Using IncrediBuild

VR Group, a Czech leader in flight trainers and simulators, needed to generate and render very large, planet-sized terrain datasets for high-quality visualization in its simulators. The offline creation of thousands of geometry and texture tiles using a P-BDAM-based pipeline was extremely CPU‑intensive and time-consuming; their initial Python/xmlrpc approach was manual, prone to concurrency issues and too slow. To address this, VR Group evaluated and adopted Incredibuild, using its XML distribution interface to express task dependencies and distribute work.

Using Incredibuild to orchestrate and distribute tile-generation across multiple CPUs, VR Group cut processing times dramatically: Andalucía (8 levels) dropped from 28:22 to 5:56, Czech Republic #1 (10 levels) from 1:52:14 to 22:53, and Czech Republic #2 (12 levels) from 7:25:25 to 2:22:28 (1 CPU vs 5 CPUs). Incredibuild handled synchronization and data exchange transparently, provided Coordinator/Monitor and Build Monitor tools, and transformed an offline preprocessing step from days into hours while delivering a robust, easy-to-use solution.
