WellSpan Health enables 82% electronic controlled-substance prescribing with Imprivata

WellSpan Health, a multi-hospital health system in Pennsylvania, faced significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities revealed by mock phishing tests and the inefficiencies and risks associated with paper prescriptions for controlled substances. To combat these challenges, they turned to vendor Imprivata and its Imprivata Confirm ID platform to implement a comprehensive multifactor authentication and electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) strategy.

Imprivata provided a single-vendor solution with its Confirm ID for Remote Access and Confirm ID for EPCS products. This enabled secure two-factor authentication for over 10,000 users and a DEA-compliant EPCS workflow for over 900 clinicians. The results included 82% of controlled substances being prescribed electronically, a major reduction in phishing risk, and improved clinical workflow efficiency and patient safety.
