Case Study: Midwestern Health System achieves day‑one secure clinician access and faster provisioning with Imprivata Identity Governance

A Imprivata Case Study

Preview of the Midwestern Health System Case Study

Managing risk and improving governance with comprehensive, integrated identity and access management

Midwestern Health System, a large regional healthcare organization with thousands of employees and more than 20,000 user identities, faced growing IAM challenges as clinicians, students, and staff constantly changed roles and locations. Relying on 40–50 staff to manually provision access created delays (new users could take up to two weeks), compliance risk under HIPAA, and an urgent need for reliable day-one access and secure electronic prescribing workflows.

To address this, the health system expanded its Imprivata IAM suite with Imprivata Identity Governance—adding role-based access control, automated provisioning/de-provisioning, and streamlined auditing—while leveraging existing OneSign SSO and Confirm ID for EPCS. The integrated approach is expected to reduce provisioning from two weeks to about two days (ROI in ~18 months), free up manual provisioning staff, strengthen security and compliance, and already deliver significant time and cost savings (SSO usage equated to roughly $400K–$800K saved and fast electronic prescribing for controlled substances).
