Locking Up Password Issues

Staffordshire Police, with about 4,500 officers and support staff, manages more than 45 applications—including HOLMES2, STORM, SPIN and FPS—and faced mounting pressure from Home Office and industry guidance to adopt stronger password policies. The resulting requirement for multiple complex, frequently changed passwords made users noncompliant at times, reduced productivity and generated heavy demand on the IT helpdesk (about 40% of calls).

After a successful pilot, Staffordshire implemented Imprivata OneSign Single Sign-On so staff use one secure password for all internal and external applications, becoming the first UK police force to achieve full SSO. The rollout secured application access, cut password reset calls to the helpdesk, increased staff productivity and was deployed across the 4,500-user population with minimal training.
