A Imprivata Case Study
Gundersen Health System is a 325‑bed teaching hospital based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, serving multiple hospitals and clinics across the region. Although Epic supported e-prescribing for non-controlled drugs, providers still had to use paper for controlled substances, creating dual workflows that frustrated clinicians, inconvenienced patients who sometimes traveled long distances, and increased the risk of prescription theft.
Gundersen implemented Imprivata Confirm ID for EPCS (alongside Imprivata OneSign SSO) to meet DEA requirements and integrate seamlessly with Epic, using two‑factor authentication with fingerprint biometrics. The rollout drove rapid adoption and delivered measurable benefits: a significant reduction in paper prescriptions, more than 80% of controlled substances prescribed electronically, improved provider efficiency, increased patient satisfaction, and reduced risk of theft and diversion.
