BayCare Health System, a community-based nonprofit serving the Tampa Bay area with 12 hospitals and extensive outpatient services, struggled with an inefficient photo ID–based check-in process, growing patient concerns about medical identity theft, and roughly 30,000 duplicate medical records (about 2% of records) that threatened patient safety—especially in emergency settings where patients often cannot provide ID.

BayCare deployed Imprivata PatientSecure, a palm-vein biometric identification solution integrated with its EMR and registration systems. Within a year duplicate records dropped 42% to under 18,000, new duplicates were eliminated at registration, enrollment simplified cleanup of legacy duplicates, and patient safety, check-in efficiency, and protection against identity/insurance fraud all improved.
