Why GameAnalytics migrated to Apache Druid, and then to Imply

GameAnalytics, a popular free cross‑platform analytics tool for game developers, outgrew its homegrown Erlang real‑time system and DynamoDB-based precomputed queries as its user base surged. The limitations of precomputing and key/value stores for ad‑hoc, multi‑dimensional analysis pushed GameAnalytics to adopt Apache Druid, and ultimately to partner with Imply, using Imply Cloud (and tools like Pivot and Clarity) to reduce operational overhead and modernize their analytics stack.

Imply delivered a managed Druid service and tooling that let GameAnalytics move to a true real‑time pipeline (streaming from AWS Kinesis) and focus engineering effort elsewhere. Today GameAnalytics ingests about 10 billion JSON events per day into Imply and their cluster serves roughly 100K requests per hour at peak, with an average response time around 60 ms and 98% of queries under 450 ms — while Pivot and Clarity give flexible data exploration and production monitoring without additional ops burden.
