How Habitat for Humanity used economic impact analysis in their efforts to discover and promote their economic significance

Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County (HFHGC) needed to quantify its economic impact beyond its social benefits to effectively lobby for continued financial and legislative support. To legitimize its operations in the eyes of state and local officials, the nonprofit required fiduciary evidence of its contribution to the local and state economies, moving beyond intuitive understanding to concrete proof.

HFHGC partnered with IMPLAN, using its economic impact analysis software and data. The analysis revealed that HFHGC's 2016 investment of over $3.5 million and its operations generated significant direct, indirect, and induced economic activity within Greenville County. IMPLAN provided the metrics to prove the organization's substantial positive economic impact, which was likely even larger than the conservative, county-restricted study suggested due to spillover effects. This data empowered HFHGC to tell a complete and convincing story to legislators and secure vital support.
