Case Study: a major American airlines achieves real-time baggage tracking with Impetus and Amazon MSK

A Impetus Case Study

Major American Airlines cuts baggage data processing from 20 minutes to real time with Impetus

Impetus worked with a major American airlines to address the challenge of outdated baggage tracking. The airline's Bag Manager application, running on Teradata, processed data too slowly, taking up to 20 minutes, which hindered real-time tracking and analytics. They needed to migrate to AWS to reduce this processing time, add more detailed checkpoints for bags in transit, and mobilize ground staff for better operational management.

The solution from Impetus leveraged Amazon Managed Streaming for Kafka (MSK) and their Gathr data pipeline platform to process about 60 complex JSON messages per second. This migration enabled real-time data processing, implemented efficient change data capture, and facilitated deep analytics on historical data in Redshift. As a result, Impetus helped the airline reduce baggage data processing time from 20 minutes to real-time, significantly cutting costs related to misrouted bags and greatly enhancing the customer experience with immediate tracking.
