A iMotions Case Study
The customer, renowned photographer and author Michael Freeman, sought to empirically validate the compositional principles in his book "On Composition" by understanding how viewers actually perceive his photographs. He partnered with iMotions and used its eye tracking platform, including the Smart Eye Aurora hardware, to measure and analyze observer gaze patterns.
iMotions implemented a controlled study using its software to present Freeman's photographs and record eye tracking data. The solution utilized features like heatmaps, Grid AOIs for Time to First Fixation metrics, and Transition Matrix analysis. The results confirmed that viewers attended to key compositional elements as intended by the artist in one complex image, while also revealing unexpected individual differences in gaze progression in another. For iMotions, this study provided a novel application of its technology in art and photography, offering the artist an unprecedented, empirical dimension for understanding viewer experience.
