Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust launches PKU Bite with Imobisoft and a 1,100+ food database

Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust required a digital solution to help patients and carers manage the complexities of a low-phenylalanine diet for the rare metabolic disorder PKU. The challenge was to create an application that could simplify food safety checks and dietary calculations. The vendor Imobisoft was engaged to design and build the PKU Bite mobile app to meet this need.

Imobisoft developed the PKU Bite app for iOS and Android, featuring a smart calculator, a database of over 1,100 foods with a traffic light safety system, and later, added blood level tracking and a clinical assessment tool. This solution streamlined patient care and reduced administrative burdens for clinicians. The successfully implemented app has been publicly released with over 1,000 downloads and is governed to meet NHS clinical safety standards.
