Case Study: Supabase achieves scalable, stateless image transformation with imgproxy

A imgproxy Case Study

Preview of the Supabase Case Study

Supabase processes 2 million images a day with imgproxy

Supabase, an open source alternative to Firebase, needed a fast, secure, and stateless image processing service to efficiently handle the approximately 2 million images it processes daily. Their challenge was to find a performant and highly configurable solution for tasks like resizing and optimization to improve the experience for their multitude of customers. They selected imgproxy to meet this need.

The solution involved implementing the open source imgproxy tool, which was deployed on AWS ECS with autoscaling for easy setup and scalability. The imgproxy integration allowed Supabase to perform on-the-fly image transformations, primarily resizing and WebP optimization, through a customized infrastructure that maximized cache hits and control. The results were highly positive, with the Supabase team reporting that imgproxy is feature-rich, scales nicely under load, and performs efficiently.
