Rio Tinto makes institutional knowledge more accessible and actionable with iManage

Rio Tinto, the world’s second largest mining company, needed a better way to make more than 150 years of specialist institutional knowledge accessible and actionable—especially for its legal team. As Christopher de Waas, Manager of Digital Transformation at Rio Tinto, explained, the prior SharePoint overlay was serviceable but lacked an intuitive user experience, powerful search, and the self-manageable, secure cloud platform required to support consistent governance and collaboration across global teams.

Rio Tinto implemented iManage Work 10 in the Cloud along with iManage Share, iManage Drive and iManage Threat Manager, migrating 4.5 million documents and rolling the platform out to 210 legal staff. The clean, user-friendly interface and improved search delivered rapid adoption (80% in four months), simplified change management, strengthened security and governance, gave the digital team direct control of the environment, and established a foundation for AI and broader business rollout.
