Case Study: Seoul National University achieves over 95% waste-sorting accuracy with Imagga

Seoul National University (SNU) developed the FUN WITH TRASH project to make recycling fun and effective, but needed a smart sensor system that could identify waste types (paper, glass, can, plastic, etc.) and respond in under 0.5 seconds. To solve this, SNU partnered with Imagga and used Imagga’s API and a custom-trained image classification service to integrate visual recognition into their hardware/IoT prototype.

Imagga’s team trained and iteratively improved the custom waste classifier, advised on sensor positioning and illumination, and supported integration, enabling robust real-world performance. As a result, the prototype achieved over 95% sorting accuracy with fast recognition, was straightforward to integrate using Imagga’s API, and the two teams continue collaborating as SNU moves toward commercialization.
