How a Virginia Hospital Automated ePCR Data into Their EMR

Carilion Clinic, a Virginia-based healthcare organization, faced significant challenges with its outdated process for receiving EMS patient care reports. The previous method relied on paper documents that were often lost, delayed by third-party scanning services, and inaccessible to ED staff during critical patient visits. To solve this interoperability problem, Carilion turned to vendor ImageTrend and its Health Information Hub (HIH) solution integrated with Kno2's Direct Secure Messaging.

ImageTrend implemented a solution that allowed EMS agencies using its Elite ePCR system to automatically send reports electronically directly into the patient's chart in Carilion's Epic EMR via Direct Secure Messaging. This eliminated paper, manual scanning, and associated delays. The results were immediate, with over 20,000 reports received in the first year, available instantly for ED staff. The solution also improved EMS crew efficiency by removing the need for printers and duplicate data entry. ImageTrend's implementation provided better patient data matching and laid the foundation for future bi-directional data exchange.
